Awards for students participating in Go Global

Value: Up to $500 per experience

Eligibility requirements 

Awards of up to $500 each have been made available annually for undergraduate and graduate domestic students and international UBC students participating in a virtual international program through Go Global. The awards are offered to help offset the additional program costs of attending a virtual international program. The awards are made on the recommendation of Go Global, and eligible candidates will be considered automatically.

Value: Up to $1,000 per term

Eligibility requirements

All students nominated for Exchange, Research Abroad, Global Seminars, Summer Abroad or Study Abroad travel programs will be considered for the Go Global award. A separate application is not required. If you meet the eligibility criteria, then you will be notified of your award after nomination to the program. Virtual programs are not eligible for this award.

To be eligible for the award, you must have an average of at least 70% on your best 18 credits in the Winter Session before your exchange (with no failed or incomplete courses) or your best 9 credits in Term 1 before your Global Seminar or Summer Abroad program.

For example, if you are going on exchange in the 2023/24 Winter session (in Term 1, Term 2, or for the full year), then your eligibility will be determined by your average and credits in the 2022/23 Winter session. If you were on a co-op work term, you must have at least 70% on your best 9 credits in the other term.

Graduate students who are full-time and in good standing with their program with no outstanding or failed grades are also eligible for the Go Global Award.

Eligibility requirements

All undergraduate students nominated for Exchange or Research Abroad for the Winter Session will be considered for the Go Global Scholarship. A separate application is not required. The scholarship will be given on a competitive basis to those with the highest averages (minimum 75%) on their best 24 credits in the Winter Session before the exchange (with no failed or incomplete courses). For example, if you are going on exchange in the 2023/24 Winter session (in Term 1, Term 2, or for the full year), then your eligibility will be determined by your average and credits in the 2022/23 Winter session. If you were on a co-op work term, then you must achieve a minimum of 75% on at least 12 credits in the other term.

Eligibility requirements

All students accepted into a research abroad program, through Go Global, will be considered for this award. A separate application is not required. If you meet the eligibility criteria, then you will be notified of your award after acceptance into the program. To be eligible for the award, you must have an average of at least 70% on your best 24 credits in the Winter Session of the previous year (with no failed or incomplete courses). If you were on a co-op work term, you must have at least 70% on your best 12 credits in the other term.

Value: Up to $1000 per term

Eligibility requirements

Must be a UBC degree-seeking student in good standing. Students must be undertaking research activity at a recognized research institution or research institute outside of Canada (i.e. an accredited university, or university- or government-affiliated research institute). Students must have support or supervision from a UBC faculty member and have confirmed an academic supervisor from the host institute. Students' research activity must be a minimum of 4 weeks in duration and students must devote 30 – 40 hours per week to the research activity. Award recipients must meet the requirements of the host institution to be a visiting researcher or student (these vary by institution). Students must also complete the Student Safety Abroad travel requirements including reviewing online learning modules and completing the Student Safety Abroad Travel registry before departure. Funded by a generous gift from donors, the Faculty of Arts, and Go Global, the ARA award aims to ensure that upper-level international research courses are accessible to academically qualified students and that scholarly preparation and aspiration rather than financial means are the deciding factors for student participation. This award is available only to qualified Arts students accepted into a Global Seminar supported by ARA. 

Value: Up to 50% of Global Seminar program costs and flight costs. In cases of demonstrated financial need (determined by Enrolment Services), ARA may fund up to 100% of the program costs and the approximate flight cost. 

Eligibility requirements

• Be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student in UBC Vancouver’s Faculty of Arts. 
• Completed 60 credits of undergraduate coursework (3rd or 4th year standing) 
• Have a minimum GPA of 70% in the top 24 credits of the previous academic year with no failed or incomplete courses in the assessed period. Priority will be given to students who have 75% in the top 27 credits of the previous academic year. 
• Be enrolled in at least 24 credits in the current academic year or enrolled in sufficient credits to satisfy graduation requirements if this is your final year 
• If demand warrants, the most competitive applicants, based on average, specialization, and interest, will be offered the ARA funding. 
• Students with exceptional circumstances regarding credit loads should identify themselves to the program contacts.   
• Accepted into an eligible Global Seminar supported by ARA 
• Further ARA eligibility requirements particular to each program will be noted on the placement or program webpage.

The Choquette Family Foundation offers awards totalling $50,000 for undergraduate and graduate UBC students participating in a Go Global program. These awards intend to support academically strong students who are interested in participating in an international experience but could not do so without financial assistance.

Value: $5,000 (1 Term) or $10,000 (Full Year)

Eligibility requirements 

• Participate in a Term (at least 4 months in length) or Full-year (at least 8 months in length) exchange or research abroad programs outside of Canada (excluding Quebec) and the USA.
• The international program must be at least four months in duration.
• Available only to students with demonstrated financial need. You must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada.
• You must have an average of at least 70% on your best 24 credits in the Winter Session before your exchange (with no failed or incomplete courses). If you were on a co-op work term, you must have at least 70% on your best 12 credits in the other term.

This award was created by the Province of BC and BC Scholarship Society to expand educational opportunities for students at post-secondary institutions across BC.

Value: $2,000-$5,000

Eligibility requirements

• You must have been nominated to participate in a Go Global exchange in the Winter Session.
• You must achieve at least 75% on 24 credits (with no failed or incomplete courses) in the Winter Session before your exchange (or 12 credits if you were participating in co-op for one of the terms.
• You must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada and have been a resident of BC for at least the past 12 months.
• You must be participating in a Go Global exchange outside of Canada and the USA and not in a country from which you immigrated in the past 10 years.
• You must meet the criteria identified on the One World International Scholarship application.
• Find the required form on the BC Scholarship Society website.

Each application requires separate references. We will accept references even if they’re not in sealed envelopes.

Eligibility requirements

• are a Canadian citizen, permanent resident (landed immigrant), convention refugee, or protected person living in Canada;
• are a resident of British Columbia, defined as having a primary residence in the province for at least 12 consecutive months before the date of full-time enrollment in the program for which the scholarship is applied;
• have achieved a minimum 3.0 (B) academic standing;
• can demonstrate links between the study- or work-abroad experience you are pursuing and your educational or career goals;
• are enrolled full-time in an academic program of at least one year at a BC public post-secondary institution leading to a credential and have been accepted into an eligible international program outside of Canada or the United States;
• will be studying abroad for a period of no less than three months (not including travel time);
• are not planning an international experience in a country from which you have immigrated within the past 5 years;
• have not previously received a Premier’s International Scholarship;
• will return to British Columbia after completing your international experience for further education or work.

• You must be nominated to attend a US partner university by Go Global.

• You must be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident.

• You must have at least 75% in the Winter Session before your exchange (and no failed, standing deferred, or incomplete courses).

• You must be registered for at least 24 credits in the Winter Session. If you are on a co-op work term for one of the terms in the Winter Session, you must be registered for at least 12 credits in the other term.

Value: $2,500 (amount varies each year)

Eligibility requirements 

• You must be nominated for a Go Global program exchange during the winter term to the National University of Singapore.
• You must have completed at least 18 credits in the Winter Session prior to your exchange with an average of at least 70% with no failed or incomplete courses.
• Awards are competitive and will be automatically considered. $50,000 in total funding is allocated per year.

Eligibility requirements 

• You must have been nominated to participate in a Go Global program at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.
• You must have at least 75% in the Winter Session before your exchange (and no failed, standing deferred, or incomplete courses).
• You must be registered for at least 24 credits in the Winter Session. If you are on a co-op work term for one of the terms in the Winter Session, you must be registered for at least 12 credits in the other term.

Candidates will be automatically considered with their program application. Only those students selected will be contacted. Conditional nominations for this award will be announced in late February.

Value: $5,000 for Winter term-based experiences and $2,000 for Summer and Research experiences 

About: Through the Global Pathfinder Award, established in 2019, UBC will award $100,000 in total funding to students who face barriers to participation in Go Global programming. 

Please note that this award is for programs taking place during the 2024/25 academic year. (Summer 2024 & 2024-25 winter terms)

Eligibility: Criteria for this award are broad in scope to recognize that all students have unique circumstances that may impact their ability to participate in international learning. Below is a list of suggested criteria that the selection committee may use:

• Have not participated in a Go Global program in the past
• Have unmet financial needs that hinder participation
• Are eligible to participate in a Go Global program, and are in good standing in their faculty
• Commitments and experience outside of school will be considered including:
  • family commitments
  • job commitments
  • community/faith commitments
• Students who belong to under-represented or marginalized groups

All applications will be considered.

The deadline to apply for the Global Pathfinder Award is November 10, 2023, at 4:00 pm for Summer 2024, and 2024/25 winter term experiences. 

Value: Between $2000 - $5000 (alternates each year between outgoing UBC students – odd years, and incoming partner university students – even years).

Travel awards totalling $3,000 have been endowed in memory of Piara Singh and Kartar Kaur Dhillon, by their two eldest children, Rashpal S. Dhillon and Rashpal K. Purewal, whose parents immigrated to Canada from Pundori Ladha Singh, Punjab, India. The awards are to support the mobility of students between UBC and institutions in India. Financial need may be considered.

There is no application. The awards are made on the recommendation of Go Global.

This award is only available for domestic students participating in a global seminar program supported by the  Forestry Global Skills Opportunity (GSO)*. The intention of this award is to support students who identify as being Indigenous, low-income or have a disability. Should there be availability, other eligible students can also be considered. This award offers full program funding for up to 6 students (per program) or partial program funding for up to 9 students (per program). 

*GSO-designated programs are identified on the Global Seminars Program Page 

Value: Up to $7200 for qualifying students, or $3000  

Eligible students who are low-income, are Indigenous or students with disabilities* may qualify for the larger amount. Other eligible students may qualify for the lower amount.  

A portion of the award covers the Global Seminar program fee, and a portion will be provided as an award on the student’s tuition account.  

Eligibility requirements 

• Canadian citizen or permanent resident
• Registered at UBC as an undergraduate student in any faculty 
• 18+ Years of age 
• To qualify for the larger amount of funding, self-identify as First Nations, Métis, and/or Inuit, or are low-income, or have a disability (see definitions below)  
• Accepted into a Global Seminar program supported by the GSO Award 
• Other eligible students, as per Go Global discretion 

*International students and graduate students are not eligible for the GSO funding.  

Definitions: 

Low-income students: students who report to be in receipt of Canada Student Grants, or similar non-repayable student financial assistance offered by provinces and territories, or, in the absence of receiving non-repayable student financial assistance, can provide information to demonstrate that they require financial support to study or work abroad. 

Indigenous students: students who report being an Indigenous person, that is, First Nations, Metis or Inuk (Inuit).

This award is generously funded by Universities Canada Global Skills Opportunity grant. The Indigenous Global Connections (IGC) Award is available for select Global Seminars that are focused on Indigenous topics and learning alongside Indigenous communities. The intention of this award is to support students who identify as being Indigenous or are interested in international learning experiences centered on Indigenous topics and dialogue.

• The IGC is considered a major award. Students will only be considered for one major International Learning Award throughout their degree (e.g., ARA, Choquette, One World, Premier, or any award valued at $2000+)

The University of Sydney is proud to partner with the Fund for Education Abroad to offer equity scholarships to UBC students, targeted towards students who are from underrepresented demographics in Study Abroad. Recipients of this award will be given a full waiver on their housing during their semester program (20-week housing contract on campus) at the University of Sydney valued at over $8,000 AUD (the award does not cover the $200 acceptance fee and security deposit of 4 weeks rent). The room is single occupancy with shared bathrooms. Please note that this award is for programs taking place during the 2024/25 academic year.
