The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar has an illustrious history that goes back to the 19th century. Today the university still adheres to the basic principles of the State Bauhaus, founded by Walter Gropius in 1919.

One scholarship is available to cover a 5-month stay during the German Winter Semester (September 2022 to February 2023). This includes German language course offered in September and covers the academic lecture period, or "Vorlesungszeit" in Weimar. Who can go?

Faculty of Arts students especially those with an interest in German language, literature and culture are encouraged to apply.

Term Dates

UBC Term 1: Bauhaus Winter Semester October - March (intensive German language course available in September)

UBC Term 2: Bauhaus Summer Semester April - July (intensive German language course available in March)

Timing

Students who attend in Term 1 will not be able to return to UBC for Term 2.

There is a summer language program available in August each year. 

Course equivalency formula

  • 2 ECTS = 1 UBC credit

Credit transfer process

The transfer credit process takes approximately 16 weeks following each submission deadline. You should allow sufficient time to meet important deadlines that may affect you (e.g. application for graduation, registration in courses that require prerequisites that you took on exchange, entry to a major/honours program, etc.)

Course information and restrictions

  • UBC students will mainly take courses in the Bauhaus Faculty of Media
  • There will be more courses available in English at the Master's Level which senior UBC students may take
  • Exchange students applying for Fine Arts, Visual Communication and Media Art and Design have to send portfolios together with the application to the International Office.
  • Most universities in Germany provide a “Schein," which you will receive for each course completed - please ensure that you keep it for your records and provide a copy to Go Global upon return from exchange

It's recommended to take 30 ECTS per semester while on exchange.

The Go Global Award $1000

All students accepted to Go Global for Exchange, Research Abroad, or Study Abroad travel programs are automatically considered for this award. If you meet the eligibility criteria, you'll be notified of your award after you're accepted to Go Global and after you get nominated to apply to the partner university.

Additional awards

Students who are eligible for awards may receive one UBC or UBC-affiliated international learning award. If you're eligible, you are always offered the highest-value award. Unless stated otherwise, you need to meet eligibility criteria set out by the University Senate regarding awards.

Information for US students: 

If you are a student from the United States, please check the US Department of Education Lookup Tool to ensure that any partner institution you wish to attend on Exchange is Title IV ‘eligible’ for Federal Student Aid for the year in which you intend to study there. For institutions outside of the US, select “Foreign Country” from the “State” dropdown menu.

If you attend an eligible institution, then you may receive Title IV federal student loans while on Exchange.

If you attend an ineligible institution:

  • You will not be eligible for US federal student loans,
  • You may invalidate any US student aid you have previously received for your studies at UBC,
  • You may be required to immediately begin repaying your US student loans, and
  • You may not be eligible for any future US student aid for the remainder of your studies at UBC.

Housing notes

Student halls of residence in Weimar are not maintained by the Bauhaus-Universität but by the Studierendenwerk Thüringen, Student Services of Thuringia. After you receive the letter of acceptance for your studies at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, please apply as soon as possible for student housing.

The minimum rental period is six months. For shorter periods, the rent will be calculated at a higher rate. At the time of signing the rental contract, students must pay deposit. The most popular accommodation for exchange students is Hummelstraße 2. See more information online.
