Credit transfer process

The transfer credit process takes approximately 16 weeks following each submission deadline. You should allow sufficient time to meet important deadlines that may affect you (e.g. application for graduation, registration in courses that require prerequisites that you took on exchange, entry to a major/honours program, etc.)

Course information and restrictions

All CUHK courses (those taught in English) are open to exchange students except for the following restrictions:

  • Faculty of Medicine and Education courses
  • Faculty of Law courses are reserved for Law majors only
  • MBA courses (except for MBA specific exchange agreements)
  • Architectural Design Studio courses (except for architecture specific exchange agreements)
  • Courses with prefix: PHED (except for those with an X after the course number)
  • College General Education courses (except for New Asia/Shaw College students taking General Education courses offered within their own college) i.e. GECC, GEJC, GEMC, GESH, GEUC
  • Student oriented teaching courses, i.e. courses with course number beginning with ‘0’
  • FINA courses under MSc in Finance Programme offered by the Department of Finance
  • MEDN courses offered by the School of Life Sciences
  • Any other courses deemed by the Department to be restricted

Additional Course Selection Information:

  • Business courses at CUHK are extremely competitive. Students are strongly advised to have flexible study plans.
  • Students interested in taking courses with topics related to China, can consider courses offered by the Contemporary China Studies programme which are taught entirely in English and catered for students who wish to enrich their knowledge in China’s cultural past, modern history and contemporary history. More details can be found at the programme website.

  • Minimum: 9 units (3 courses) per term
  • Maximum: 18 units (6 courses) per term
  • Note: Most CUHK courses are 3-unit each

Exchange Tuition

  • 15 credits or equivalent full-time program fee per term, paid to UBC
  • Students in the International Summer School program attend through our exchange agreement and pay tuition to UBC based on the number of credits earned at the partner institution
  • Students in the Summer Undergraduate Research Programme pay tuition and other fees, besides the application fee, directly to the partner
  • Some exceptions may apply

Scholarships and awards

The Go Global Award $1000

All students accepted to Go Global for Exchange, Research Abroad, or Study Abroad travel programs are automatically considered for this award. If you meet the eligibility criteria, you'll be notified of your award after you're accepted to Go Global and after you get nominated to apply to the partner university.

Additional awards

Students who are eligible for awards may receive one UBC or UBC-affiliated international learning award. If you're eligible, you are always offered the highest-value award. Unless stated otherwise, you need to meet eligibility criteria set out by the University Senate regarding awards.

Scholarships and Awards Information: 
  • A variety of academic scholarships, awards and financial assistance are available to help students and to provide incentives for excellence
  • These are administered by the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid

Information for US students: 

If you are a student from the United States, please check the US Department of Education Lookup Tool to ensure that any partner institution you wish to attend on Exchange is Title IV ‘eligible’ for Federal Student Aid for the year in which you intend to study there. For institutions outside of the US, select “Foreign Country” from the “State” dropdown menu.

If you attend an eligible institution, then you may receive Title IV federal student loans while on Exchange.

If you attend an ineligible institution:

  • You will not be eligible for US federal student loans,
  • You may invalidate any US student aid you have previously received for your studies at UBC,
  • You may be required to immediately begin repaying your US student loans, and
  • You may not be eligible for any future US student aid for the remainder of your studies at UBC.

Housing notes

  • On-campus housing is automatically assigned to admitted students, additional application is not required
  • Students will be assigned to double or triple-occupancy rooms in college managed hostels with local roommates
  • Students will share a room with a local student to help students settle in at CUHK and immerse into the Chinese culture
  • Each room is equipped with highspeed internet access
  • Typically, students are offered a subsidy to offset the cost of housing at CUHK
