  • Participate in the Nagoya University Program for Academic Exchange (NUPACE), which offers a flexible curriculum in both English and Japanese. 
  • NUPACE also offers a flexible combination of Japanese language training and Japanese studies courses
  • Live in Nagoya City. Nagoya is the 4th largest city in Japan, and the capital city of Aichi Prefecture. Nagoya lies in the southwest part of Central Japan and is conveniently place for access by public transport through being on the main Shinkansen (Bullet Train) railway 
  • Be emerse in an academic program with students from over 200 universities 
  • Be eligible to enter into the "Buddy System" at Nagoya University.

Credit transfer process

The transfer credit process takes approximately 16 weeks following each submission deadline. You should allow sufficient time to meet important deadlines that may affect you (e.g. application for graduation, registration in courses that require prerequisites that you took on exchange, entry to a major/honours program, etc.)

  • S Excellent ( 90-100) 
  • A Very Good ( 80-89) 
  • Good (70-79) 
  • C Satisfactory (60-69) 
  • F Fail ( 0- 59)

Course information and restrictions

  • The number of credits granted is determined by the academic regulations of Nagoya University and is based on the number of hours studied 
  • NUPACE students (Exchange Students) earns two sets of grades in courses taken for credit: Grades based on Nagoya University's system, and their equivalent on the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) Scale 
  • NUPACE students are also given the opportunity to register for courses in "Nagoya University Global International Programmes" or "G30 Programmes", which is undergraduate and graduate programmes taught entirely in English. Exchange students who wish to register for G30 courses should apply directly to the NUPACE office

Full course load information

  • Exchange students are required to be enrolled in a minimum of 15 credits and maximum of 30 credits per semester
  • 1 course can range from 1, 1.5, 2 and 3 credits

The Go Global Award $1000

All students accepted to Go Global for Exchange, Research Abroad, or Study Abroad travel programs are automatically considered for this award. If you meet the eligibility criteria, you'll be notified of your award after you're accepted to Go Global and after you get nominated to apply to the partner university.

Additional awards

Students who are eligible for awards may receive one UBC or UBC-affiliated international learning award. If you're eligible, you are always offered the highest-value award. Unless stated otherwise, you need to meet eligibility criteria set out by the University Senate regarding awards.

Information for US students: 

If you are a student from the United States, please check the US Department of Education Lookup Tool to ensure that any partner institution you wish to attend on Exchange is Title IV ‘eligible’ for Federal Student Aid for the year in which you intend to study there. For institutions outside of the US, select “Foreign Country” from the “State” dropdown menu.

If you attend an eligible institution, then you may receive Title IV federal student loans while on Exchange.

If you attend an ineligible institution:

  • You will not be eligible for US federal student loans,
  • You may invalidate any US student aid you have previously received for your studies at UBC,
  • You may be required to immediately begin repaying your US student loans, and
  • You may not be eligible for any future US student aid for the remainder of your studies at UBC.

Housing notes

Nagoya University operates two mixed Japanese/international student dormitories, and three dormitories used exclusively by international students. Students will reside one of the following rooms in the residences: 

  • Single room, furnished with an air conditioner, bed, bath/shower, open closet, desk lamp, and chair
  • Studio room furnished with an air conditioner, bed, bath/shower, open closet, desk lamp, and chair
