  • TUM has three campuses within greater Munich that are well connected by public transport. TUM’s City Campus is located in the "Old Town" of Munich, close to many monuments, restaurants and bars as well as cultural amenities. Campus Garching, north of Munich, constitutes the center of natural sciences and technology at TUM. TUM School of Life Sciences Weihenstephan campus is located on the outskirts of the old cathedral town of Freising and has evolved from the traditional disciplines of agricultural and life sciences

  • While undergraduate education at TUM is primarily in German, at Master’s level a substantial part of courses is taught in English. 3rd or 4th year undergraduate exchange students are welcome to attend classes at Master’s level (given they meet the requirements).
  • Students with B2 level may take German-taught classes (to determine your level, self-assess with the European Language Portfolio Global Scale)

  • Term 1 (TUM Winter semester): Early October to mid-February
  • Term 2 (TUM Summer Semester): Early April to mid-August

Timing

  • Students attending TUM Winter Term will not be able to return to UBC for Term 2
  • Students attending TUM Summer Term might not be able to return to UBC for Term 1 (It is possible that students finish in time to return - students will need to coordinate with the relevant department(s) at TUM to ensure they are not taking courses with exams in September)
  • Orientation programme provided to help newly arrived international students, beginning each semester 2 weeks before classes begin

Credit transfer process

The transfer credit process takes approximately 16 weeks following each submission deadline. You should allow sufficient time to meet important deadlines that may affect you (e.g. application for graduation, registration in courses that require prerequisites that you took on exchange, entry to a major/honours program, etc.)

  • Most courses taught in English are at the Master's level, however, advanced Bachelor's students with the necessary prerequisites can apply for these

  • Students will receive a "Schein" upon completion of each course (typical of German universities) - please be sure to keep this for your records as you will be required to provide a copy to Go Global upon your return

Scholarships and awards

The Go Global Award $1000

All students accepted to Go Global for Exchange, Research Abroad, or Study Abroad travel programs are automatically considered for this award. If you meet the eligibility criteria, you'll be notified of your award after you're accepted to Go Global and after you get nominated to apply to the partner university.

Additional awards

Students who are eligible for awards may receive one UBC or UBC-affiliated international learning award. If you're eligible, you are always offered the highest-value award. Unless stated otherwise, you need to meet eligibility criteria set out by the University Senate regarding awards.

Scholarships and Awards Information: 
  • Students considering this university are encouraged to apply for the generous DAAD Undergraduate Scholarship -  application is due by January 31, before you will have received confirmation of your exchange, therefore you will require a letter from Go Global to apply
  • For 2018/19: Students nominated for TU Munich will be considered for additional funding from Erasmus+ of 820 Euros for travel plus 800 Euros/month for living costs for a maximum possible funding of 4900 Euros

Information for US students: 

If you are a student from the United States, please check the US Department of Education Lookup Tool to ensure that any partner institution you wish to attend on Exchange is Title IV ‘eligible’ for Federal Student Aid for the year in which you intend to study there. For institutions outside of the US, select “Foreign Country” from the “State” dropdown menu.

If you attend an eligible institution, then you may receive Title IV federal student loans while on Exchange.

If you attend an ineligible institution:

  • You will not be eligible for US federal student loans,
  • You may invalidate any US student aid you have previously received for your studies at UBC,
  • You may be required to immediately begin repaying your US student loans, and
  • You may not be eligible for any future US student aid for the remainder of your studies at UBC.

Additional Fees

  • Students cannot register at TUM without proof of German national insurance (Health insurance is compulsory in Germany)
  • To ensure coverage is sufficient to meet German national standards, it is recommended that students purchase an in-country medical insurance plan (travel insurance is not accepted)
  • Students may purchase German full coverage for approx €76-78 monthly
