Course information and restrictions

  • Courses in Arts and Social Sciences are in high demand and exchange students will have to be flexible with their course selections in these areas
  • Chemistry and Law students — must attend for a full year
  • Computer Science limited
  • Medicine / Dentistry / Life Sciences are not open to exchange students
  • When selecting courses, ensure that they are available in the semester for which you are applying
  • If nominated to Bristol, they will request that students provide a provisional study plan so they can confirm students' courses prior to arrival
  • Psychology at Bristol is taught as an experimental science rather than a social science. Students taking Psychology units are generally required to have a strong background in Chemistry, Biology and Neuroscience. Units within our School of Psychological Science have limited capacity therefore the student will need to be flexible when choosing units

Scholarships and Awards Information:

Information for US students:

If you are a student from the United States, please check the US Department of Education Lookup Tool to ensure that any partner institution you wish to attend on Exchange is Title IV ‘eligible’ for Federal Student Aid for the year in which you intend to study there. For institutions outside of the US, select “Foreign Country” from the “State” dropdown menu.

If you attend an eligible institution, then you may receive Title IV federal student loans while on Exchange.

If you attend an ineligible institution:

  • You will not be eligible for US federal student loans,
  • You may invalidate any US student aid you have previously received for your studies at UBC,
  • You may be required to immediately begin repaying your US student loans, and
  • You may not be eligible for any future US student aid for the remainder of your studies at UBC.

Housing notes

  • September entrants to Bristol are guaranteed University housing for their time in Bristol
  • January entrants, although not formally guaranteed University housing, almost always get in
  • Accommodation ranges from self-catered student houses in Clifton (near the University) to large catered halls of residence in Stoke Bishop (35 minutes walk across open parkland)
  • Between these two lie a whole range of housing situations
  • You will be asked to choose between two main categories of accommodation — catered or self-catered:
    • Catering plans on offer are rather more restrictive in both portion and menu than you may be used to, and not suitable for people who have any sort of dietary restrictions
    • Nonetheless, catered halls represent reasonable value for money and a good alternative for those who do not enjoy cooking
    • Also tend to be very social places to meet other students
    • Self-catering is very easy, and a popular choice for international students
  • Your application for accommodation will be sent to you when you have been offered a place and given confirmation of your acceptance, and you should submit your form as soon as possible
  • Questions should be emailed to: accom-office@bris.ac.uk
