Who can go?

  • Exchange students can take coursework in most areas of study (students on exchange with Alliance Manchester Business School are limited to one course outside of the business school.)
  • Students must have a minimum 72% cumulative average to attend this partnership
  • Students wishing to study in Psychology must have a cumulative average of 75% or higher
  • English language entry requirements: Please remember that students whose first language is not English should usually provide certificates as evidence of their language ability. There is a difference between what University of Manchester accepts for admissions purposes, and what UK Visa and Immigration need for year-long students who need a Student Visa. For more information, please speak with your Go Global Engagement Advisor.

Timing

  • For students in possession of a Tier 4 Visa status, the University requirement is that you attend all classes, including lectures, seminars and tutorials - any absences that are unaccounted for will be followed-up on by the International Office
  • Humanities students wanting to return to UBC for Term 2 will likely be able to take alternative exams in December
  • No alternative assessments are possible for Economics, Applied Science and Science students (except for Biological and Earth/Environmental Sciences)

Credit transfer process

The transfer credit process takes approximately 16 weeks following each submission deadline. You should allow sufficient time to meet important deadlines that may affect you (e.g. application for graduation, registration in courses that require prerequisites that you took on exchange, entry to a major/honours program, etc.)

  • 60-69% Very Good, 2.1 Degree
  • 50-59% Good, 2.2 Degree
  • 40-49% Pass, Third Class Degree

Course information and restrictions

  • Semester two and full year exchange students: Students are expected to be in attendance for all examinations - students are not permitted to take special assessments in place of examinations
  • Semester 1 only, Commerce students: Students are able to choose from a selection of semester one and full year courses - if students wish to leave in December and not return for the examination period in January, the student should complete the appropriate section on the course choice form supplied with the MBS acceptance pack, in order to make special assessment arrangements
  • Commerce students may only take 1 course outside of the Manchester School of Business Course offerings
  • Computer Sciences courses are overly subscribed to at Manchester. You must be a CPSC Major at UBC to be eligible to request CPSC courses at Manchester and enrolment is not guaranteed.

Full course load information

  • You will need to select a full course load of 60 Manchester credits per term or 120 Manchester credits per-year
  • For Manchester Business School: full workload for the year is 120 MBS credits – 60 MBS credits per semester

Exchange Tuition

  • 15 credits or equivalent full-time program fee per term, paid to UBC
  • For the European Summer Study Program, tuition and other fees, aside from the application fee, are paid directly to the partner

Scholarships and awards

The Go Global Award $1000

All students accepted to Go Global for Exchange, Research Abroad, or Study Abroad travel programs are automatically considered for this award. If you meet the eligibility criteria, you'll be notified of your award after you're accepted to Go Global and after you get nominated to apply to the partner university.

Additional awards

Students who are eligible for awards may receive one UBC or UBC-affiliated international learning award. If you're eligible, you are always offered the highest-value award. Unless stated otherwise, you need to meet eligibility criteria set out by the University Senate regarding awards.

Information for US students: 

If you are a student from the United States, please check the US Department of Education Lookup Tool to ensure that any partner institution you wish to attend on Exchange is Title IV ‘eligible’ for Federal Student Aid for the year in which you intend to study there. For institutions outside of the US, select “Foreign Country” from the “State” dropdown menu.

If you attend an eligible institution, then you may receive Title IV federal student loans while on Exchange.

If you attend an ineligible institution:

  • You will not be eligible for US federal student loans,
  • You may invalidate any US student aid you have previously received for your studies at UBC,
  • You may be required to immediately begin repaying your US student loans, and
  • You may not be eligible for any future US student aid for the remainder of your studies at UBC.

Housing notes

  • The University Accommodation Office will endeavour to allocate accommodation to students studying at UM for a Full Year, Semester One or Semester Two from University Halls
  • Students attending for one semester only will not be able to choose a specific Hall or the type of accommodation but can indicate a preference between a Self-Catered or a Catered Hall (this cannot be guaranteed)
  • Applications for accommodation will be sent with the application material and must be submitted to the UM International Office and not sent to the Accommodation Office
