Who can go?

  • Exchange students can take coursework in most areas of study. Students must have a minimum cumulative 73% GPA to attend this partnership
  • However, students with a GPA between 70-73% will be considered if they are able to provide a written recommendation from a professor

Term Dates

Please note that UNSW operates on a trimester exchange system. Please read the following carefully as there are several options available within several of the terms.

  • UBC Term 1 = September- December (UNSW Term 3)
  • UBC Term 2 = February- May (UNSW Term 1) 
  • UBC Full Year = Aug or Sept – mid-May or August (UNSW Term 3 start – see below) 
  • UBC Split Year = February-December (UNSW Term 1 start)

Students who are interested in starting their exchange in UNSW’s Term 3 should select UBC Term 1 or Full Year on their Go Global applications.

Students who are interested in starting their exchange in UNSW’s Term 1 should select UBC Term 2 or UBC Split Year on their Go Global applications.

After students are matched to UNSW, Go Global will ask them to clarify what combination of UNSW terms they would like to attend:

If you are matched to a UBC Term 1 experience, your options are as follows:

UNSW Tailored Term 3: August – mid-December

  • Includes an intensive course in August, and then 3 courses for the Sept-Dec portion
  • This will allow you to earn the equivalent of 15 UBC credits

UNSW Term 3: September – mid-December

  • This will allow you to earn the equivalent of 12 UBC credits

If you are matched to a UBC Full Year option, your options are as follows:

UNSW Term 3 + 1: September to mid-May

  • You will take 3 courses per term, totaling 6 courses (Sep-Dec and Feb-May) (i.e. 3 + 3)
  • This will allow you to earn the equivalent of 24 UBC credits

UNSW Term 3 + Term 1 + Term 2: September to late-August

  • This will allow you to take 3 courses in Term 3 and Term 1 and 2 courses in Term 2, totaling 8 courses (30 UBC credits) (i.e. 3 + 3 + 2)

UNSW Tailored Term 3 and Tailored Term 1: August – mid-May

  • You will take an intensive course in August, 3 courses for the Sept-Dec portion, an intensive course in January, and 3 courses for the Feb-May portion totaling 8 courses (30 UBC credits) (i.e. 1 + 3 + 1 + 3)

If you are matched to a UBC Term 2 experience, your options are as follows:

UNSW Tailored Term 1: January – mid-May

  • Includes an intensive course in January, and then 3 courses for the Feb-May portion
  • This will allow you to earn the equivalent of 15 UBC credits

UNSW Term 1: Mid-Feb – mid-May

  • This will allow you to earn the equivalent of 12 UBC credits

UNSW Term 1 + 2: Mid-Feb to August

  • You will take 2 courses per term (Feb – May and May-Aug)
  • This will allow you to earn the equivalent of 15 UBC credits

If you are matched to a UBC Split Year option, your options are as follows:

UNSW Term 1 + Term 2 + Term 3: February to mid-December

  • This will allow you to take 3 courses in Term 1 and Term 3 and 2 courses in Term 2, totaling 8 courses (30 UBC credits) (i.e. 3 + 2 + 3)

Timing

  • Commerce: When applying to Go Global, UBC-V Commerce students must select 'University of New South Wales-COMM' on their Go Global application
  • Law: When applying to Go Global, UBC-V Law students must select 'University of New South Wales-LAW' on their Go Global application

Credit transfer process

The transfer credit process takes approximately 16 weeks following each submission deadline. You should allow sufficient time to meet important deadlines that may affect you (e.g. application for graduation, registration in courses that require prerequisites that you took on exchange, entry to a major/honours program, etc.)

Scholarships and awards

The Go Global Award $1000

All students accepted to Go Global for Exchange, Research Abroad, or Study Abroad travel programs are automatically considered for this award. If you meet the eligibility criteria, you'll be notified of your award after you're accepted to Go Global and after you get nominated to apply to the partner university.

Additional awards

Students who are eligible for awards may receive one UBC or UBC-affiliated international learning award. If you're eligible, you are always offered the highest-value award. Unless stated otherwise, you need to meet eligibility criteria set out by the University Senate regarding awards.

Information for US students: 

If you are a student from the United States, please check the US Department of Education Lookup Tool to ensure that any partner institution you wish to attend on Exchange is Title IV ‘eligible’ for Federal Student Aid for the year in which you intend to study there. For institutions outside of the US, select “Foreign Country” from the “State” dropdown menu.

If you attend an eligible institution, then you may receive Title IV federal student loans while on Exchange.

If you attend an ineligible institution:

  • You will not be eligible for US federal student loans,
  • You may invalidate any US student aid you have previously received for your studies at UBC,
  • You may be required to immediately begin repaying your US student loans, and
  • You may not be eligible for any future US student aid for the remainder of your studies at UBC.
