UBC is expanding collaboration with the University of Stuttgart in science, technology and innovation, and in joint clean energy research supporting the new Canada-Germany Hydrogen Alliance, signed by Chancellor Scholz and Prime Minister Trudeau in August 2022.

Visiting UBC from the University of Stuttgart, Professor Peter Middendorf, Vice-Rector for Knowledge and Technology Transfer, met with Dr. Walter Mérida, UBC’s Faculty of Applied Science Associate Dean of Research and Industrial Partnerships, at the Vancouver campus. Shortly after, UBC and the University of Stuttgart signed a new partnership agreement.

The two discussed potential collaborative projects, involving industry partners, in clean energy and hydrogen, particularly in the mobility sector and heavy-duty transport. UBC boasts Canada’s first city-scale integrated hydrogen energy system demonstration, which will soon include a green hydrogen refueling station on campus to service light- and heavy-duty vehicles, the only one of its kind in British Columbia. The collaboration will capitalize on the complementary strengths and cutting-edge research of both institutions, and will enable cross-fertilization of innovation models of UBC and the University of Stuttgart, for example the ARENA2036 project at the University of Stuttgart.

The just-inked partnership agreement, focused on collaboration in clean energy and hydrogen, builds upon a long-standing partnership between UBC and the University of Stuttgart across a range of fields and disciplines.
