Grad students: Apply for prestigious fellowship for 1-year exchange at Yale

November 22, 2022

Do you want to play a leading role in overcoming some of the most daunting obstacles facing the world today? Are you a UBC graduate student hoping to further your research—and broaden your horizons outside Canada?

Under the Fox International Fellowship banner, both UBC and Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut host grad students from each university so they can combine efforts.

Along with enhancing mutual understanding between the U.S. and other countries via scholarly exchange, the fellowship’s aim is to promote collaboration among global leaders of tomorrow. The current Fox Fellowship network has 600-plus alumni. The program sends PhD and Masters students to 21 top universities in Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, the Middle East and the Americas to do independent research for one academic year.

If your work “has the potential to offer insight into the problems and challenges standing in the way of the world’s peace and prosperity,” and is interdisciplinary and multi-national in nature, apply to Go Global for nomination by Jan. 10.

Focus areas include global affairs, international relations, environmental policy, law, social sciences, public health, economics and political science, business, finance management and contemporary history.

Jory Smallenberg, UBC Department of Political Science master’s student, was a Fox fellow in 2021. “During my time with Yale, I learned about the role of Jewish people in the fight for interwar minority rights, assessed the relationship between law and mercy with fellow Giordana Campagna, and, with fellow Jeanine Quené, identified values conflicts among conservatives who fought for suffrage in America,” said Smallenberg, who previously earned an interdisciplinary degree in Honours Sociology and French. “In sincerity, I cannot think of a better way to conclude my graduate studies at UBC than to share in a multi-cultural and intergenerational think tank with scholars committed to the most intense global challenges.”

UBC’s Go Global unit supports participants from both universities; the UBC Visiting International Research Students’ team offers guidance to Yale students.
