Considerations

Accessibility

If you have a disability or pre-existing health condition—mental or physical—which could impact your participation in Go Global or if you need academic accommodations, call an Accessibility Advisor before the start of the program:

  • The Centre for Accessibility (Vancouver) 604 822 5844
  • Disability Resource Centre (Okanagan) 250 807 8053

Withdrawal and Refunds

To withdraw from your program, you must contact Go Global by email to request a withdrawal.

  • If you are not selected for a program, or if you choose not to accept your spot in the program when it's offered: No program fees will be charged.
  • If you withdraw after you accept your spot in the program: you are responsible for the full program fee, regardless of whether the fee has been charged yet on the SSC. In cases where expenses can be recovered from our program partners, we may be able to reduce or refund a portion of the fees but this will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

Go Global Fee ($415) policy:

  • If you withdraw by April 7: your Go Global fee will be adjusted from $415.00 to $321.75 (refund of $93.25).
  • If you withdraw after April 7: you are responsible for the full GG fee (i.e. no refund of GG fee)

In the case of withdrawal, Go Global Award funding must be returned in full.

Student Safety Abroad & Pre-Departure

Requirements
We are committed to your safety. Please help us ensure a safe and successful global experience for you. Students participating in a Go Global Program must complete the following:

  • UBC Student Safety Abroad requirements
  • Go Global Program-specific pre-departure requirements

If you do not fulfill these and any other requirements, you place will be withdrawn from the Go Global Program.

Travel advisories
Read the Global Affairs Canada travel report for advisories for your destination country before applying.

COVID-19
Students and faculty are required to comply with the entry requirements of the host country, regulations of transportation carriers and any local public health orders. These rules might require COVID-19 vaccination for entry or to participate in certain program activities, testing requirements, masking requirements and/or isolation in case of infection. Where isolation due to infection is not required by local health authorities and students are sharing accommodations, isolation could be a challenge.

Review local requirements before applying and before departure. Check the Global Affairs Canada Advisory under Entry Requirements for your Global Seminar destination to learn more. Keep in mind that program conditions can vary and rules can change before or during your trip.

When close to your group's departure date, Go Global will inform you of all updated local requirements and COVID-19 safety plans for the Global Seminar.

How to apply

Step 1

Review seminar details on each program page. We encourage you to attend an information session.

Step 2

Review eligibility guidelines for the program you are interested in.

Step 3

Apply online through the Go Global Gateway.

Go to “search experiences” from the top menu, search “GSP,” then press “apply search.” Scroll down to the program you want and select apply for “Summer” or “Term 2."

Go Global will ask you to provide written statements on:

  • Your personal and academic motivations for applying to this program
  • Your previous global/intercultural experience (note: We encourage students with no or little previous travel experience to apply!)
  • Your suitability and preparedness for the specific program you are applying for (eg, the climate, activities, etc.)
  • How you will contribute to a positive group learning environment

After the deadline, Go Global and faculty program directors review student applications. Go Global will access your grades and academic history as part of the application review. We might ask you to submit additional documents or participate in an interview as part of the selection process.

Go Global Fee ($415)

Students who have been selected to participate in a Global Seminar and confirm acceptance* will be charged a $415 Go Global Fee (an administrative fee charged to all UBC students participating in a Go Global program).

Students are charged the Go Global Fee max once per academic cycle, so if you are also applying for different type of programs (e.g. exchange and a Global Seminar), you will only pay the Go Global Fee once.

*Note: Students who are also applying to another type of Go Global program like exchange or summer study abroad will be charged this fee after applying.

If you withdraw by April 7: your Go Global fee will be adjusted from $415.00 to $321.75 (refund of $93.25).

If you withdraw after April 7: you are responsible for the full GG fee (i.e. no refund of GG fee)
