Fostering collaboration, cross-border bilateral cooperation and knowledge exchange between Canada and France is the aim of the Mourou-Strickland Program, an initiative of the French Embassy in Canada. Applications are now open to Canadian scholars interested in travelling to France for the 2024 program, which centers on the discovery of specific research and innovation ecosystems in both countries.
Candidates must have a permanent or tenure-track position and be attached to a laboratory or department of a Canadian or French university or research centre. This year's call is open to all fields of research and encourages interdisciplinarity. The program funds one round-trip economy-class Canada-France or France-Canada flight and contributes to living costs.
In 2018, when the initiative first began, Donna Strickland from University of Waterloo and Gérard Mourou from Ecole Polytechnique jointly won the Nobel Prize in Physics, the highest scientific distinction, for their work together on lasers.
