Funding Opportunity: Indo-Pacific Scholarships and Fellowships for Canadians

Global Affairs Canada (GAC) has launched a new call for proposal under the Indo-Pacific Scholarships and Fellowships for Canadians (IPSFC) program, which supports eligible Canadian post-secondary academic institutions, university consortia and research organizations to award scholarships and research fellowships to graduate students, academics and researchers at their institutions to study or undertake research in the Indo-Pacific Region.

SUMMARY:

This opportunity is intended to benefit Canadian (holders of Canadian citizenship or permanent resident status) graduate level students (including students at master’s, doctoral and post-doctoral levels), Canadian researchers (including post-doctoral, academic and professional researchers associated with a research institution or think tank), and Canadian academia (tenured or non-tenured academics). Scholarship and Fellowship recipients are expected to travel to the Indo-Pacific. 

Study or research must be in line with Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy, including topics such as: regional diplomacy, regional political change, national and regional security, trade and economic cooperation, technological innovation, sustainable development, climate change, natural (including marine) resources management, and applied scientific cooperation.

  • GAC Deadline (External): August 6, 2025 at 12:00pm (Eastern Time)
  • Maximum Funding: $520,000
  • Project Duration: Proposed projects must start after November 1, 2025 and end before March 31, 2028

APPLICATION PROCEDURE:

UBC is eligible to submit one proposal. Those who are interested in submitting a IPSFC proposal are encouraged to attend an information session hosted by Global Affairs Canada to learn more about the call for proposals. Please see the information session dates and registration details below. 

Following the information sessions, the Office of Global Engagement will release a Letter of Intent (LOI) form that all interested applicants must complete and submit to the Office of Global Engagement (OGE) at global.partnerships@ubc.ca by 12:00 pm Pacific on July 14, 2025. The LOI form will be released on this webpage on June 27, 2025. 

All LOIs received by the deadline will be reviewed by a committee convened by the OGE. The selected project will be announced by July 22, 2025. The OGE will support the selected team to submit the full proposal by the external deadline of August 6, 2025. Support will include a high-level review of proposal documents, advice related to the Indo-Pacific Strategy and GAC funding applications, and submission through the GAC portal. 

Internal collaboration among UBC faculties and departments is encouraged.

  • June 25, 2025 (3:30-4:30pm Eastern): Online information session on the Indo-Pacific Scholarships and Fellowships for Canadians (English session)
  • June 26, 2025 (3:00-4:00pm Eastern): Online information session on the Indo-Pacific Scholarships and Fellowships for Canadians (French session)
  • July 14, 2025 (12:00pm Pacific): Deadline for submission of letters of interest to Office of Global Engagement
  • July 22, 2025: Selection of UBC proposal
  • August 6, 2025 (12:00pm Eastern): Submission of UBC proposal to Global Affairs Canada
