Perhaps you are investigating global health issues or food systems that can withstand the turbulence of climate change, or evaluating ways to make international economies more sustainable and inclusive. If you are a student researcher – at the master’s level or in the first two years of your PhD – consider applying for a research award from the International Development Research Centre (IDRC).
A Canadian federal Crown corporation investing in “knowledge, innovation and solutions to improve the lives of people in the developing world,” IDRC helps emerging researchers in Canada apply their work in new and inventive ways towards solving global development challenges. Awards go towards capacity building and career development with an international perspective through funding academic study, exchange, research, grant administration, program management, hands-on experience and skill-building.
Eligible researchers can apply for funding relating to democratic and inclusive governance, education and science, ethics in development research, global health, policy and evaluation, sustainable inclusive economies and climate-resilient food systems in developing countries.
Students must be Canadian citizens, Canadian permanent residents or citizens of developing countries who have a work permit in Canada. Non-Canadian citizen or permanent-resident students from low- or middle-income countries can apply as well if enrolled at a Canadian university. Student applicants must have completed a master’s program from a recognized university in the last three years or be enrolled in a PhD program. IDRC will give preference to students in their first two years of a PhD program and to those who have already completed their master’s degree.
Award winners can tap into a one-year salary of $42,000 to $48,000 CAD from May 2022 to April 2023 as a full-time employee of IDRC to fund advancement of their chosen research topic.
