Update: Watch the concert recording (video).

There will be plenty of camaraderie, global community building — and above all, beautiful music — next week when Germany’s University of Stuttgart student orchestra visits the UBC Vancouver campus.

UBC Symphony Orchestra, with conductor Jonathan Girard, is putting on a public concert with the University of Stuttgart Academic Orchestra, with conductor Mihály Zeke, at the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts Sept. 20. The musical program includes Brahms, Bartók and Schumann.

In addition to the music, it will be a busy two days of collaborative partnership. UBC’s Office of the Vice-Provost International is honoured to welcome the University of Stuttgart’s Rector Dr. -Ing. Wolfram Ressel to campus on Sept. 19 and 20, alongside student dinners for both orchestras, rehearsals, exchange opportunities and campus activities. The Stewart Blusson Quantum Matter Institute is also gathering dozens of scientific collaborators from the University of Stuttgart, Max Planck Institute, University of Tokyo and UBC for their annual meeting on campus.

The musical connection sparked back in August 2019, when Rector Ressel visited UBC, sitting down with UBC President and Vice-Chancellor Santa Ono, who also shares a passion for music, to talk about a future tour of each university’s student orchestra. After COVID-19 pandemic delays, the Stuttgart Academic Orchestra is now finally travelling North America’s West Coast, kicking off its tour in Vancouver.
