Other Program Restrictions for Exchange Students

Overview

For exchange students planning to take courses at UBC, there are course restrictions for specific programs:

  • School of Kinesiology
  • Faculty of Land and Food Systems
  • Faculty of Forestry
  • School of Law
  • School of Music
  • School of Population and Public Health
  • School of Public Policy and Global Affairs
  • School of Social Work

School of Kinesiology

Very limited availability as many courses are restricted and have a limited class size, particularly KIN 110, 120, 131, 132, 235, and 275. Students should not expect to take more than 3 KIN courses per term. 

For all KIN courses, exchange students are added to the waitlist and only reviewed after the department has completed registration for their major students.

Faculty of Land and Food Systems

Graduate exchange students can take up to 6 credits of 500-level Food and Resource Economics (FRE) courses, subject to approval by the MFRE program. Please contact Gabi at gabrielle.menard@ubc.ca to seek approval.

Faculty of Forestry

The following courses are not open to exchange students:     

  • All MGEM coded courses, except for MGEM 500, which requires permission from the instructor
  • FRST 519, 533, 526, 534, 543, 559, 560, 562 (MIF program)
  • FRST 555, 556, 557, 558

School of Community and Regional Planning

Graduate-level PLAN courses that are part the Master of Community and Regional Planning (MCRP) program are not open to exchange and visiting students.

School of Law

  • Law courses are only open to students from universities that have a law exchange arrangement with UBC and have been nominated via that arrangement.
  • Students applying to Law must have completed at least one year of law studies with an average of 70% (or equivalent).
  • Canadian citizens or permanent residents are not permitted to apply for a Law exchange (with exceptions to be made for students applying to attend UBC on exchange from a Canadian law school). The Law exchange program is meant to promote educational and cultural exchange among citizens of other countries.
  • Access to specific courses is not guaranteed. Students should plan to complete their core requirements at their home university.
  • Students are eligible to take 300- and 400-level courses (subject to availability)
  • Space in seminar and clinical/experimental courses is typically limited. Graduate (500-) law courses are not available.
  • Please review the Allard Law Inbound Exchange Students Webpage for a list of courses that are not available to Law Exchange Students.

School of Music

Auditions are held during the first week of school. See sign-up information:

No supporting documents or audition materials are required ahead of time.

School of Population and Public Health

  • There is limited availability for SPPH courses, most of them being at the graduate level.
  • SPHA courses are not open to exchange students.

School of Public Policy and Global Affairs

PPGA courses have limited availability.

The following courses are not open to exchange students.

  • PPGA 500 through 519
  • PPGA 590A and PPGA 590B
  • MPPGA core courses

School of Social Work

Very limited availability as many courses are restricted and not open to exchange students. Not all courses are offered every term. Please view specific course restrictions on the course schedule.
